SpaceX is entering a new chapter. Starship, the most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, is designed to place more than 100 metric tons into orbit in a fully reusable configuration. While its long-term ambitions extend to the Moon and Mars, its most important near-term application may be closer to home: rapidly expanding the capacity of the Starlink communications network.

Starship: A Conveyor Belt to Orbit

Starship is the most powerful launch vehicle ever developed. It stands nearly 400 feet tall and 30 feet in diameter, carrying more than 100 metric tons into orbit, roughly four to five times the maximum payload of Falcon 9 (the rocket currently used by SpaceX).    

If completed as designed, it will solve one of the most difficult engineering challenges in history – a fully and rapidly reusable orbital class rocket that can be mass manufactured. Starship is unlike any other rocket to precede it, effectively creating a conveyor belt into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Combined with orbital refueling, it will be the first rocket to build a spacebridge to the Moon and, potentially, even Mars.  

What is Starlink V3? The Next Generation Satellite

The Starlink V3 is the next generation satellite from SpaceX. For customers of its popular broadband service, it is designed to support up to 1 terabit per second (Tbps) of downlink and 160 gigabits per second (Gbps) of uplink.  That represents roughly a 10x improvement in downlink capacity and 22x in uplink versus V2. At more than 1,700 pounds each, V3 satellites are substantially heavier, making Starship critical to deploying them at scale in orbit.1  
 

A New Era in Global Connectivity

The math illustrates how dramatically Starship and V3 could expand Starlink’s capacity, and what that could mean for global communications:

  • Approximately 60 V3 satellites per planned Starship launch.

  • Approximately 1 Tbps of downlink capacity per satellite – roughly 10x the bandwidth of V2.

What Does the Future Look Like?

Today, SpaceX has 10,900 operational Starlink satellites in LEO. The company currently has regulatory authority to deploy as many as 15,000 second-generation Starlink satellites.2 On the latest earnings call, Musk indicated a target of 1,000 V3 satellites by Q2 2027, with bandwidth equivalent to the entire current Starlink constellation. This could potentially double Starlink revenues, given the current network is already capacity constrained.  

SpaceX’s ambitions extend well beyond that. In July 2026, SpaceX filed a separate application with the Federal Communications Commission seeking authority for a new third-generation constellation comprising as many as 100,000 satellites.3 The impact on revenue is real – as Musk mentioned on the recent earnings call, even if pricing fell by a factor of 10, Starship and V3 still mean revenue could increase tenfold.4  

Spectrum is the other critical part of the equation. Through its agreements with EchoStar, SpaceX is acquiring approximately 65 MHz of nationwide spectrum: 40 MHz of AWS-4, 10 MHz of H-block, and 15 MHz of unpaired AWS-3 spectrum. This gives SpaceX substantially more capacity with which to develop its next-generation direct-to-device service.

Starlink Is Going After Terrestrial Telecom  

Satellites have always been capable of reaching mobile phones directly, but struggle with urban areas, due to building penetration and other forms of interference. Direct-to-device satellite service began as a way to provide messaging and limited connectivity outside terrestrial coverage. V3 satellites and additional spectrum could broaden that proposition, potentially supporting higher-speed services directly to standard mobile devices. That would allow Starlink to address not only remote coverage, but also parts of the mainstream mobile market.

In a sign of the potential disruption ahead, SpaceX has indicated that it could use part of the EchoStar spectrum to start a terrestrial mobile network. On the latest earnings call, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell went as far as saying the company may start to build small cellular base stations, known as Femtocells, attached to Starlink broadband dishes.  Together, that could bring SpaceX closer to offering a full mobile network and put it in more direct competition with AT&T and Verizon.
